Blackberry or Brickberry

Having spent the last couple years working on a wide variety of Blackberrys I have had some problems and found some “non conventional” solutions. Probably the most frustrating thing in the world is when you install a new program onto your Blackberry and the next thing you know it won’t start back up and there is an error such as 507 displayed on the screen. Well don’t throw it across the room just yet (as I many times have done further confirming the durability of these crazy devices). There may be hope yet. Many times the Blackberry can be spared a painful death by reinstalling the BB OS and the java modules. Now this is surprisingly easy (in theory). All that you have to do is

  1. Download/install Blackberry Desktops software

  2. Download/install Blackberry Handheld software for your device (http://Blackberryforums.pinstack.com/3311-Blackberry_os_software_links_by_carrier.html)

  3. Startup Blackberry Desktop Manager and select Application Loader

  1. If all goes well you should be able to reinstall the system software and core applications turning your brick back into a working device

*So what if everything does not go well?

There are some tricks I have learned that may help you save a device

During the “waiting for device initialization” stage sometimes the device wont initialize. I have been able to make the device initialize by trying several things.

Method 1) Try doing the whole process without the battery in. When the “wait for device initialization” comes up and isn’t doing anything uplug the device wait a second and then plug it back in.

Method 2) Try doing the whole process without the battery in. When the “wait for device initialization” comes up and isn’t doing anything put the battery in.

Method 3) Do the process with the battery in. When the “wait for device initialization” comes up and isn’t doing anything quickly take the battery out and put it back in.

I have had some luck with doing the above steps to correct errors such as jvm 507, jvm 105, 365 device error, abort exception error, prefetch exception error, and even when the Blackberry is not powering on. I have had some Blackberrys that I kept messing with for hours (yea I know I seriously need to get a life) unplugging the power cable at different intervals and eventually it worked. I have had others that never would work and I just used them for parts. I have heard of some people using the javaloader application to fix these errors and load the java modules but I have not had had a chance to look into that yet. Well have fun and if it doesnt work remember that you can always just sell it on eBay.
